Con of The Dead
convention design

The goal of this project was to design a convention and all the convention collateral. This project was really enjoyable to work on since it was so involved and detailed. It was really fun to develop the custom typography and imagery that went into this project.

The type and imagery for this project are all distressed by hand using chemicals. After the chemical distressing was completed, the type was then scanned and then digitized. I chose to do this, because I did not want the repetitive look of digital distressed type.

The photos of this project are from my 2010 design school portfolio, the project itself was done in 2008

con-flyers

Early flyers and ads

All the marketing collateral is based on the core concept of gradual stages of an outbreak. Early pieces talk about odd events and strange murders. As the event gets closer the marketing collateral becomes more and more specific and urges people to make their way to the con on the given dates.

Convention posters during the event would mimic quarantine and military zone signs.

Badges

The badges for the con mimic the type of ID tag a person in a massive refugee camp would have.

con-box

Attendee kit

Each attendee would receive all their convention materials, like the map and schedule in a box simulating a first aid kit. The med kit was cast by me, and the text is a rub-down transfer.

Gift set

The convention gift set would be a selection of zombie movies curated based on the convention’s guest of honor. I created the box you see here by hand and gave it a gritty texture.

Convention guide / zombie survival guide

The guidebook for the convention doubles as a zombie survival guide. I hand-bound the book, then lit it on fire for distressing. I went in page by page to get more refinement on the burn effects.
The final page lists the cure for the outbreak, but has unfortunately been destroyed.

Logo

The logo for this project was designed on the computer first, then printed out. Chemicals were used to distress the type and get a unique patter. The final result creates a unique look to this specific piece and would be impossible to replicate exactly.
